GLBT Resources:

Organizations and resources

Albuquerque GLBT Chamber of Commerce
www.ABQGLBTChamber.com
Albuquerque GLBT Chamber of Commerce is a business and professional organization whose purpose is to "Promote prosperity in the Gay Community". They do this through outreach, education and networking. They have an online directory so you can see some of the gay and gay supportive businesses in Albuquerque. They also have periodic events throughout the year to foster networking and visibility of the organization. Check out their website or FB page to find out what's happening.

Albuquerque Pride
www.abqpride.com
Not just active in June, Albuquerque Pride is always looking for and providing ways to support and promote the Albuquerque Gay Community. They organize the Gay Community table at the New Mexico State Fair, and are often seen at other community events providing valuable information. Their main focus is, of course, the annual Albuquerque Pride parade and festivities. Organizing what is arguably the best parade in the city, Albuquerque Pride is a highlight of the year.

New Mexico AIDS Services (NMAS)
www.nmas.net
One of Albuquerque's most active and critical organizations, NMAS has a number of fundraising events throughout the year. More details are available on their website and below. In addition to the events below they have an occassional Rummage Sale. Stop by and do some shopping, or donate items for them to sell.

Equality New Mexico (EQNM)
New Mexico is one of the few states without DOMA. This is thanks to this amazing organization that works exclusively on securing and keeping the rights of all New Mexicans. They are currently working on a Domestic Partnership bill in the current legislative session. They have events throughout the year and have a list serve that keeps you udpated and in touch with what's happening. Visit www.eqnm.org for more information, take a survey, make a donation, or volunteer.

Annual Events

AIDS Walk – June
Usually in March, the AIDS walk will this year be a part of the Pride March in June. The main fundraising event for New Mexico AIDS Services, it's a great way to get involved with the community, meet people and help support one of the greatest assets in the Albuquerque Gay Community.

Southwest Annual FunnyFest - May
There's no better way to support the community then by laughing. Bringing in nationally known comedians, this event became a "can't miss" in it's first year. Visit www.southwestfunnyfest.com for tickets and more information. This event is growing every year and tickets sell faster and faster. I'm a major sponsor of this event so look for me in the orchestra and for my ad on the back cover!

Annual Equality Ball - April
Support the local equal right group by attending one of the more upscale events in the Albuquerque Gay Community. Visit www.eqnm.org for photos from previous years and for more information.

Tour de Bosque - June
This is a great event for anyone with a bike. Not just for the bicycle racer, this is another one of the chances to help out NMAS.

Albuquerque Pride - June
The parade travels from Nob Hill to the Fair Grounds on San Pedro and is followed by more festivities including vendor booths, live music, dancing, food in a kid friendly environment. Having lead the country in children positive Pride festivals, Albuquerque Pride is truly an event for everyone.

Soutwest Gay and Lebsian Film Festival - September
Closet Cinema brings us one of the best film festivals in the region. There is always something for everyone in this well organized and high quality offering of Queer film. Many shows sell out, so get your tickets early, and see as many of these great films as you can. Not only a film festival, there are always a number of great events to enhance the week long experience. Visit www.closetcinema.org for more information.

Come Out Come Out Wherever You Are - October
A true testiment to the diversity and openness of Albuquerque, this mostly drag variety show is held at the Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque. In honor of National Coming Out Day, Come Out Come Out is always entertaining and, for me, touching. Our brave and talented bothers and sisters perform and entertain in one of the year's best community shows. (I just can't hep it, I always cry at least once because I'm always so proud of everyone.)

NOTE: It's easy to join a Yahoo Group. Just visit Yahoo.com, go to the Groups section, look up the group you want to join and send in a request. The manager of the group usually has to approve you and then you'll start receiving emails from the selected group. I am a member of all of the following groups and often find out about community events and important issues through these emails. I recommend the Digest version of each so you get more information in each email, and you only receive them once a day.
